The Sky Between Us

Gillian Kayrooz & L-FRESH The LION

Commissioned by Campbelltown Arts Centre
Campbelltown Arts Centre, 1 Art Gallery Road, Campbelltown
27 June – 13 September 2026

Respected Western Sydney artist Gillian Kayrooz and globally recognised hip hop artist L-FRESH The LION collaborate with five emerging Campbelltown artists — Rose Bahatta, Rozana Dedovic, Japneet Kaur Saini (JAPI), Mariah Alone (RIAH) and Kingston L Vaaulu (K3ZRA) — to respond to works in the Campbelltown City Council Art Collection, creating a series of transdisciplinary installations titled The Sky Between Us.

The exhibition creates points of connection and dialogue with significant works previously created for Campbelltown by renowned artists Abdul Abdullah, Abdul-Rahman Abdullah, Kate Blackmore and Tom Polo. Local histories move between generations and reveal how communities shape the narratives that define them.

The practices of Kayrooz and L-FRESH are deeply embedded in their experience of growing up in Western Sydney, under a shared sky that is both physically present and metaphorically vast. It is under this sky that memory, history and possibilities of the future converge, creating a living thread between past and present.

The Sky Between Us premieres two new collective artworks by Kayrooz and L-FRESH — The Sky Between Us and Sky Archive — bringing together places of personal and cultural significance to individuals in Campbelltown. The exhibition positions young people as active contributors to an evolving cultural record of Campbelltown, and to the ongoing question of who shapes the story of a place.

In 2026, Kayrooz and L-FRESH will deliver the ReVITALise Public Art Commission, a major transformation of the Hurley Street Underpass in the Campbelltown CBD.
